Lawyer Crossword — Privacy Policy
Effective date: October 8, 2026
1. Who we are and what this policy covers
Lawyer Crossword is published by RB-KinneySoft LLC, a North Carolina limited liability company ("we", "us", "our"). We decide how and why the personal information described here is used.
This policy explains what information the Lawyer Crossword app for iPhone and its supporting services (together, the "app") collect, how we use it, who receives it, how long we keep it, and the choices you have. It applies to everyone who uses the app, wherever they live.
The short version:
- We collect only what the app needs to run: your account email, your puzzle activity, your subscription status, and basic technical logs.
- We do not sell your information, show ads, or track you across other companies' apps and websites.
- The only companies that process your information for us are Apple (purchases) and Amazon Web Services (hosting).
- You can delete your account and its data at any time from inside the app.
The app is intended for adults. You must be at least 18 years old to use it.
2. Information we collect
We collect the information in this table, and nothing else.
| Category | What it includes | How we get it |
|---|---|---|
| Account information | Your email address, your password (stored only in hashed form, never in readable text), and an account identifier we assign | You provide the email and password when you create an account |
| Profile information | Your name; the stage you select (for example law student, bar candidate or practicing lawyer), which sets the wording level of clues; your handle (the name others see in standings); your avatar choices (colors, letters or a symbol; a photo you pick stays on your phone and is never sent to us); your school and firm; and the topics you choose | You choose them during setup and can change them in Record › Settings |
| Standings information (optional) | Whether you have opted in to the leaderboard and to your firm's colleague table, and your handle and firm as shown there | Only if you opt in; you can opt out at any time |
| Puzzle activity | Puzzles and packs you open, your entries and progress, completion times, hints used, streaks, rank and mastery progress | Generated as you play and saved to your account |
| Purchase information | Subscription product, status, renewal and expiry dates, and the transaction identifiers Apple gives us | From Apple when you subscribe or restore a purchase |
| Technical and log information | IP address, the app and system details your device puts in each request (its "User-Agent"), your account identifier, the time, address and result of each request, error details and a request identifier | Sent automatically when the app talks to our servers |
| Support correspondence | Your account email address, your message, and whether you agree that we may contact you for more information | You provide it when you contact us through Support in the app |
3. Information we do not collect
- We never receive your payment card or bank details. Apple processes all payments.
- We do not collect precise location, contacts, photos, microphone or camera data, health data, or advertising identifiers.
- We do not use third-party analytics, advertising or tracking software in the app.
- We do not buy or obtain information about you from data brokers or other outside sources.
4. How we use information
We use your information only for the purposes in this table. For people in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom and Switzerland, the last column gives our legal basis under data protection law.
| Purpose | Information used | Legal basis |
|---|---|---|
| Create and secure your account, sign you in, reset your password | Account information, technical and log information | Performing our contract with you |
| Provide the puzzles, save and sync your progress, set clue wording to your stage, calculate streaks, rank and mastery | Profile information, puzzle activity | Performing our contract with you |
| Show you on the leaderboard, and in your firm's colleague table if you opt in, and show you those standings | Standings information, puzzle activity | Your consent, which you can withdraw by opting out |
| Confirm and manage your subscription and unlock paid features | Purchase information | Performing our contract with you |
| Keep the app working, find and fix errors, prevent abuse and cheating | Technical and log information, puzzle activity | Our legitimate interest in a secure, reliable app |
| Understand in aggregate how puzzles perform so we can improve them | Puzzle activity, in aggregated form | Our legitimate interest in improving the app |
| Answer your questions and send service notices about your account, these terms or this policy | Account information, support correspondence | Performing our contract with you; our legitimate interest in responding to you |
| Meet legal, tax and accounting obligations and enforce our Terms of Use | Purchase information and other information as the law requires | Legal obligation; our legitimate interest in protecting our rights |
We do not use your information for advertising, we do not build advertising profiles, and we do not make decisions about you by automated means that have legal or similarly significant effects. We do not send marketing email. If we ever want to use your information for a new purpose, we will update this policy and ask for your consent where the law requires it.
5. How we share information
We do not sell your personal information, and we do not share it for advertising. It reaches other parties only in the situations below.
| Who | What they receive | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Amazon Web Services, Inc. | All information stored on our servers, including account, profile, standings, puzzle activity, purchase status and logs | AWS hosts our servers and databases, delivers account emails such as password resets and receives and forwards messages sent to our support address. It processes the information only on our instructions. |
| Apple Inc. | Apple processes your purchase itself and tells us the result | Apple runs the App Store and in-app purchases. Apple's handling of your Apple Account and payment details is governed by Apple's own privacy policy. |
| Other users of the app | Your handle and standing, and your firm if you opt in to your firm's colleague table | Only if you opt in |
| Courts, regulators and law enforcement | The information a valid legal demand requires | To comply with law or a binding legal process, or to protect the rights, property or safety of our users, the public or us |
| A successor business | The information we hold | If we are involved in a merger, sale or transfer of the business that operates the app. We will notify you before your information becomes subject to a different privacy policy. |
Any service provider that receives your information from us must protect it to at least the standard described in this policy and in Apple's App Review Guidelines, and may use it only to provide its service to us.
We do not track you. We do not link information from the app with information from other companies' apps, websites or data brokers for advertising or advertising measurement. Because we do not track, the app does not respond differently to browser or device "Do Not Track" or similar signals.
We do not send your information to any third-party artificial intelligence service.
6. How long we keep information
We keep your information for as long as you have an account, and then only as long as the table shows.
| Information | How long we keep it |
|---|---|
| Account, profile and puzzle activity | Until you delete your account |
| Standings information | Until you opt out of standings or delete your account |
| Technical and log information | Up to 30 days, then deleted |
| Backups | Deleted information may remain in encrypted backups for up to 7 days before it is overwritten |
| Support correspondence | Up to 2 years after the conversation ends |
| Purchase information | Until you delete your account. Apple keeps its own record of your purchases under Apple's privacy policy |
7. How we protect information
Information traveling between the app and our servers is encrypted in transit, and information stored on our servers is encrypted at rest. Passwords are stored only in hashed form. Access to production systems is limited to people who need it to operate the app.
No system is perfectly secure. If a breach affects your personal information, we will notify you and the relevant authorities as the law requires. Use a password you do not use elsewhere, and tell us through Support in the app if you think your account has been compromised.
8. Deleting your account and data
You can delete your account inside the app at any time under Record › Settings › Account and your data › Delete account. You do not need to contact us.
- When you delete your account, the app shows the date it will be deleted. Until then you can change your mind by signing in. On that date your account, profile, standings information, puzzle activity and purchase information are removed from our live systems, within 31 days of your request.
- Deletion is permanent and cannot be undone.
- We keep nothing else, apart from the backup copies described in section 6 until they are overwritten. Apple keeps its own record of your purchases.
- Deleting your account does not cancel a subscription. Apple will continue to bill you until you cancel in your Apple Account settings or at https://apps.apple.com/account/subscriptions, so cancel there first.
If you cannot reach the app, write to us at the address in section 13 and we will delete the account for you.
9. Your rights and choices
We give every user the rights below, wherever they live.
- Access and portability. Ask for a copy of the personal information we hold about you, in a commonly used electronic format.
- Correction. Change your email under Record › Settings › Account and your data › Email, and your profile under Record › Settings, or ask us to correct anything you cannot change yourself.
- Deletion. Delete your account in the app (section 8) or ask us to delete specific information.
- Withdraw consent. Opt out of standings at any time in Settings. Withdrawal does not affect what was done before you withdrew.
- Object or restrict. Ask us to stop or limit a use of your information that relies on our legitimate interests.
- No retaliation. We will not deny you the app, charge a different price or provide a lesser service because you used any of these rights.
To make a request, use Support in the app while signed in. Your signed-in account verifies the request. We respond within 30 days, or within the shorter or longer period your local law sets, and requests are free unless they are clearly excessive. You may use an authorized agent, who can write to us at the address in section 13; we will ask for proof of their authority.
If we decline a request, we will tell you why and how to appeal. Write to the same address with the subject "Privacy appeal" and we will answer within 45 days. If the appeal is denied, you may contact your state attorney general or local regulator.
United States residents. State privacy laws, including those of California, Colorado, Connecticut, Virginia and other states, give residents rights to know, access, correct, delete and obtain a copy of their personal information, and to opt out of sale, of sharing for cross-context behavioral advertising, of targeted advertising and of certain profiling. We do not sell personal information, share it for cross-context behavioral advertising, use it for targeted advertising, or profile in ways that produce legal or similarly significant effects, and we have not done so in the preceding 12 months. Sections 2, 4, 5 and 6 list the categories of information we collect, the purposes, the recipients and the retention periods. We do not collect sensitive personal information as those laws define it, other than your account sign-in credentials, which we use only to sign you in.
European Economic Area, United Kingdom and Switzerland. You have the rights listed above under the GDPR and equivalent laws. You also have the right to lodge a complaint with the data protection authority where you live or work. We would appreciate the chance to address your concern first.
10. Children
The app is for adults aged 18 and over. It is not directed to children, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 18. If you believe a minor has created an account, write to us at the address in section 13 and we will delete it.
11. Where information is processed
We are based in the United States, and our servers are located in the United States. If you use the app from another country, your information is transferred to and processed in the United States, where data protection law may differ from the law where you live. Where the law requires a transfer safeguard, we rely on standard contractual clauses approved by the European Commission and the United Kingdom, or another lawful mechanism.
12. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy as the app or the law changes. The effective date at the top shows the current version. If a change is material, we will tell you in the app or by email before it takes effect, and we will ask for your consent where the law requires it.
